THE BOOK OF WATCHERS
- Dream Vision of Enoch: his intercession for Azâziêl and the fallen Angels: and his announcement to them of their first and final doom.
Chapter 12
1 Before all these things Enoch was concealed, but none of the sons of men knew where he was concealed, where he had been and what had been done.
2 He was entirely employed with the Holy Ones, and with the Watchers in his days.
3 I, Enoch, praised the great Lord and King of peace. And behold the Watchers called me Enoch the scribe. Then the Lord said to me,
4 “Enoch, scribe of righteousness, go and declare to the Watchers of heaven, who have forsaken the exalted heaven, and their everlasting mansion, and have defiled themselves with women, and have done actions like the sons of men by taking to themselves wives, and they have been greatly polluted on the earth,
5 that on the earth they never shall obtain peace and forgiveness of sin,
6 for they shall not rejoice in their offspring, they shall see the slaughter of their beloved, they shall lament over the destruction of their sons, and shall solicit for ever, but they shall not obtain mercy and peace.”
Chapter 13
1 Then I Enoch went on further, and said to Azaziel, “Thou shalt not obtain peace, for a great sentence is gone forth against thee. He will bind thee.
2 Neither shall ease, mercy, and intercession be thine, by reason of the oppression which thou hast taught. And by reason of every act of blasphemy, tyranny, and sin, which thou hast disclosed to the children of men.”
3 Then I went away, and spake to them all gathered together. And they were affrighted, and trembled.
4 They besought me to prepare for them a petition, that they might obtain forgiveness, and that I would convey the petition of their prayer before the God of Heaven,
5 because they were not able themselves from that time to turn to him, or to lift up their eyes unto heaven, by reason of the ignominious crime for which they had been judged.
6 Then I wrote a petition of their prayer and supplication for their souls, concerning all that they had done, and for the object of their entreaty, that they might obtain forgiveness and rest.
7 Going further, I passed over the waters of Danbadan, which is on the right side of the west of Armon, and read the memorial of their petition until I fell asleep.
8 And behold a dream came to me, and visions appeared above me. I fell down, and saw a vision of punishment, that I might describe it to the sons of heaven, and reprove them.
9 When I awoke, I went to them. They all stood weeping together in Oubelseyael, which is between Libanus and Senezer, with their faces veiled.
10 I related in their presence all the visions which I had seen, and my dream. And began to declare these words of righteousness, and reprove the Watchers of heaven.
Chapter 14
1 This is the book of the words of righteousness, and of the reproof of the Watchers who belong to the world, in consequence of that which He, who is Great and Holy, commanded in the vision.
2 I understood in my dream, that I now spake with a tongue of flesh, and with my breath, which the Almighty has put in the mouth of men, that with it they may speak, and understand with the heart.
3 As He has created and given to men to understand the words of wisdom, so He has created and given to me to reprove the Watchers, the offspring of heaven.
4 I have written your petition, and in my vision it has been shewn to me, that what you desire will not be given you, as long as the world remains. Judgment has been passed upon you, nothing will be granted to you.
5 From this time forth you never shall ascend into heaven. He has said that He will bind you on the earth, as long as the world remains.
6 But before these things you shall see the destruction of your beloved sons, you shall not enjoy them, but they shall fall before you by the sword.
7 And ye shall not petition for them, nor for yourselves, but ye shall weep and supplicate in silence, the words of the book which I wrote.
8 A vision that appeared to me: Behold, in that vision, clouds and a mist invited me on. Agitated stars and rays of light incited and pressed me forwards, while winds in the vision assisted my flight hastening my going on. They raised me to the height of heaven.
9 I went forward until I came to a wall built with stones of crystal, a moving flame surrounded it, which began to make me afraid.
10 I entered into this moving flame. And I came near to an extensive residence, which also was built with stones of crystal, for its walls as well as its floor were stones of crystal, and the ground also was crystal.
11 Its roof had the appearance of stars violently agitated, and flashes of lightning, and among them were cherubim of fire, and their heaven was water.
12 A flame burned round its wall, and its portal flamed with fire.
13 When I entered into this dwelling it was hot as fire, and cold as ice. No trace of joy or of life was there. Fear overcame me and a dreadful trembling seized me.
14 Violently agitated and trembling, I fell on my face.
15 In the vision I saw, and behold there was another far more extensive habitation, to which every entrance before me was open, established in a moving flame.
16 So great was the appearance in every respect, in glory, in magnificence, and in magnitude, that it is impossible to describe to you either its magnificence or extent. Its floor was all on fire. Above were lightnings and agitated stars, while its roof displayed a flaming fire.
17 Its floor was all on fire. Above were lightnings and agitated stars, while its roof displayed a flaming fire.
18 I beheld it attentively, and saw that it contained an elevated throne, the appearance of which was like that of sapphire, while its circumference was like the orb of the radiant sun, and there was the voice of the cherubim.
19 From beneath this mighty throne flowed rivers of flaming fire, to look upon it was impossible.
20 One great in glory sat thereon, whose robe was brighter than the sun, and whiter than snow.
21 No angel was able to press forward to view the face of Him, the Glorious, and the Effulgent— nor could any mortal behold Him.
22 A fire was flaming around Him. Also a fire of great compass continued to rise up before him, so that none of those who stood around him came near to him, among the myriads of myriads who were before him. To him holy consultation was unnecessary,
23 yet the sanctified, who were near him, departed not far from him either by day or by night, nor were they withdrawn far from him.
24 I also was so far gone forward with a veil before my face and trembling. Then the Lord with his mouth called me and said, “Come near hither, Enoch, at My holy word.”
25 And He raised me up, and caused me to come near even to the entrance. My eye was directed to the ground.
